| Middlebury, Vermont Artist Statement: I have made art for most of my life and am influenced and inspired by the environment I find myself in; walks and hikes, a trip or journey or going something challenging. By chance I took a lantern-making workshop and learned of the design and construction of Isamu Nogouchis Akari lights. Inspired, I began to make my own forms and experiment with different papers. The possibilities were exciting and I am still exploring them! Seeds, shells, and stones natural materials inspire my work. I like to take a pod or a seed idea and work it in different sizes and papers, building the lighting aspect into construction. The work process is often like a meditation, providing opportunities for reflection and problem solving. It demands patience and imagination as well as the use of practical lighting considerations. It is this time alone, working with the materials and experimenting that centers me and opens my mind to new possibilities. There is a certain satisfaction in creating both a practical and functional piece of art. My formal art education is from Bennington College. While in the Peace Corps I traveled to Ecuador to work with straw weavers where I gained my love for weaving. |
