| Artists Statement: Art allows endless possibilities. The creative freedom that art making provides generously contributes to my happiness. Nature is my primary source of inspiration. There is a world of magic outdoors! My imagination is often triggered while Im hiking, fishing or driving. Through observation, identification and research my appreciation for the local wildlife has grown. My collection of sketches and photos from the field have served as reference images for my paintings. In this body of work I try to capture what I find to be ethereal whether it may swim, fly or flower. Emotion can influence the intensity of hue as well as the level of realism or whimsicality of each piece. I often attempt to create transporting landscapes, waters, and skies to compliment my subjects. Driven by my imagination, I tend to embellish these places making them often surrealistic. I love to observe what happens to sunlight in a trout brook. I often try to capture the sunset-colored haze that the bird songs ribbon through. These paintings are a product of my profound connection to nature and my passion for making art. Over the years I have had many artistic influences. Vermont artists have had the strongest effect on my approach. I have tried to integrate the disciplines of illustration and printmaking into my painting style. I love the compositional dichotomy of a realistically rendered subject and an abstract background. Oil paint has been my preferred medium although I still enjoy drawing. I like the challenge of working in color. I feel fortunate to live in an area where wildlife and art are celebrated.
