Carrie Hayes was born in 1982 in Watertown, New York.  She grew up with a family who encouraged her passion for creating art as well as her fascination with nature. All of her life, she has been captivated by the beauty and magic of aquatic ecosystems. Even at a young age she would often explore the pond in her backyard returning home with a jar of tadpoles to observe and sketch.
Carrie studied art at Green Mountain College, an environmental liberal arts college. It was there that she studied painting, art history, and environmental issues.  At Green Mountain College, Carrie began painting her first vibrant close ups of trout. On each canvas she combined her two loves: art and nature. Carrie graduated from Green Mountain College in 2004 with a Bachelor in Fine Art. She spent the following summer in Italy studying the works of the Italian Masters.
Carrie has participated in solo and group shows in Vermont and New Hampshire galleries. Most of her paintings are in private collections in Montana, New York, and New England. She currently lives in Woodstock, Vermont, where between the mountains, she has found many rivers from which to fish and sketch.

Artist's Statement:

“I've been fascinated with trout ever since I caught my first one out of the creek at my grandparents' camp. I think I was 8. I marveled over the colors and the shape of this fish that came from only a small pool at the edge of the creek.
Trout are exceptionally wary of their environment. They can detect a threat with their acute senses. This creates quite a challenge even to the most experienced angler. So each time I catch one I am in awe, and I feel a sense of privilege. Its incredible when the thrill of the catch is combined with the excitement of seeing this fish up close. To see its bright spots, tiny fins and eyes…I try to capture that feeling onto each canvas.
