Kaarina M. Designs, Jaffrey, New Hampshire Artist Statement: Unusual objects have always given me enjoyment and excitement, and the simple beauty of nature has always inspired me. As a child, I always had pockets full of stones. Now whenever I travel, stones come back as souvenirs from Yunnan province in China, the rugged coast of Newfoundland or the Arctic Circle in Finland or the flea markets of Paris. I cannot take a walk on a beach without collecting a handful of beautiful shells and beach stones. The art of nature both perfect and imperfect is right at my feet to inspire me! The world of cultured pearls, gemstones, and old jade opened up while visiting friends in China in the 90s. I was awed by the varieties of gems and pearls available in the markets. The antique markets were full of old jades and unusual objects The earth and oceans supply me with incredible materials to challenge my creativity. The myriad of colors and tactile sensations of stones and pearls inspire me to create unique pieces that are timeless. Eila has studied at the Studio Jewelry School at the Gemological Institute of America in New York where she studied diamonds, colored stones and pearl grading. |
