Dirk was born in Germany and now resides with his wife and child
in a small town in Eastern Ontario, Canada. Their home is within
a block of a very active railroad station, which is an inspiration for
many of Dirk's pieces. His use of geometric shapes, triangles, rectangles
and grids reflect not only his roots in industrial design but also his
insight into the ways design evokes emotional responses from each of us.
Linear images and perspective play a predominant role in Dirk's oil paintings.
Overall, Dirk can be viewed as an observer and recorder. Through his
use of color, tone, space and line, the mundane becomes beautiful and mysterious.
In the Artist's Words:
"My background is in industrial design, which provides me an
appreciation for the things that we make, build and use that we find around
us. My interest in photography makes me look for images. What
I paint are those moments, images that I find as I walk and drive through
the countryside. The way light falls on a subject, a certain time
of day, a color, the texture of a surface, or the form of an object can
all trigger a response. I love to discover that which is all around
us but goes unnoticed by most of us."
