In 1985 Katie received the Francis Siff Scholarship from the University of California. A year later, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with distinction, followed by a Master of Fine Arts in 1989.  In 1990 she receive an Award of Distinction in a juried national group exhibit at the Redding Museum of Art in California.

Having spent her life riding and caring for horses, Katie seeks through drawing, painting and sculpture to understand them.  In her oil paintings, she captures the contradictions of the equine image: at once massive and forceful, while also graceful and even fragile.  Katie's horses, even at rest, appear dynamic with the potential to leap instantly from the canvas.

In the Artists Words:

"I am a professional artist, trained in the vocabulary of my time, which happens to be modernism.  As a student making big abstract paintings, my sketchbook was always full of horses.  Between my first and second years in graduate school-when Amy, our first daughter, was born-something happened· the horses just came pouring into my work, completely re-defining the energy and focus of what I do·Horse images dominate my work because I love them- I never get tired of their form.  There must be some metaphysical connection, although I don't claim to understand what it is.  My entire life-experience with horses is ultimately the source of my work."
