Mary was born in 1946 in Columbus, Ohio. She studied English and Theater at Mills College in Oakland, California and went on to study theater at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City. She spent two years abroad traveling and living in England and France, and worked in major art centers of Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Mexico.
Since 1970, Mary's collages have been featured in one-person and group exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad. Mary finds her materials in art books, art magazines, calendars and end papers, which are glued with acid free acrylic medium on Birch or Mahogany. The work is then sealed with eight coats of clear acrylic varnish. Each of Mary's frames are designed, constructed and hand-painted exclusively for each piece. Mary currently resides in Williamsville, Vermont with her husband, Roger Sandes, who is also an artist, and their three children, Samuel, Rupert, and Louisa.
In the Artist's Words:
"Some things are exactly what they appear to be. Some things are not. Dwellings, their setting and contents reveal the layers of mystery surrounding the lives of all of us. I use found materials placed in new contexts to ask questions about appearances and reality and to stimulate our imaginations about new possibilities."
